For 40 years, in collaboration with our cherished donors and partners, Parks Foundation has been a catalyst in pioneering and creating innovative outdoor spaces that Calgarians love and cherish. This commitment drives the Building Communities Program, which supports the development of parks, playgrounds, and green spaces that are safe, inclusive, and shaped by the community, for the community.

Since 2009, over $4 million has supported community-led projects across Calgary. In 2024 alone, 11 new spaces opened, with 11 more on the way – all driven by passionate community groups and schools who understand how vital outdoor spaces are for health, connection and belonging. The Building Communities Program offers a full-service platform to registered non-profits, guiding them through every step of their playground and park revitalization project—from planning and fundraising to design and construction.
However, the cost of playground equipment has risen by more than 50% since 2020, making it harder than ever to create the safe and vibrant spaces our communities need. Playgrounds are essential for play, social connection, and healthy child development, and these rising costs pose a significant challenge in building these outdoor spaces for children and families.
